Pride and Prejudice

2020 reread Can I just say, Rosamund Pike absolutely kills the audio?? The voices she does are absolute perfection!! It made it easy to tell who was talking and added so much joy and beauty to the story. 

I still really enjoy this story. I don't feel like I ever really truly noticed just how fitting this title is. Of course I've realized it, but this time it seemed to really click. Elizabeth is this prideful individual who doesn't want to budge with her thoughts or actions while Darcy can let his prejudice get in the way of things. They truly embody the title and it's magical to see a title fit so well with the story. 

There are so many soft moments throughout this book. Yes, Darcy and Elizabeth go at each other, but as they are slowly opening up and learning there is more to each other than they originally thought there are just these soft moments that appear and I love it so much. 

The family dynamic between the Bennett family is truly wonderful. I love seeing all their little quirks and nuances as to how they work all over again. They are a close knit family and while they have their arguments they do look out for and care for one another. 

Original I choose to listen to the audiobook version while following along with a hardcopy hoping that it would help me with the old English, but for me, I think seeing the movie beforehand was a little bit more help. As the English could sometimes be difficult to grasp and then there was always so much of it. It felt like there was a lot of fluff throughout the novel. 

Other than that, the story is excellent. Lizzy is a headstrong individual who doesn't want to conform to what society expects of her. She wants to live her life the way she sees fit and is determined to do that. She's not afraid to stand up to people and speak her mind and ugh. It's freakin' wonderful. I love Lizzy. 

I also really loved Elizabeth's relationship with her sister Jane. They were so close and would happily confide in one another. The trust they had between one another was beautiful. They were encouraging and would life one another up when one of them was feeling down. It's a beautiful sibling relationship!

There was so much development throughout the story which made it a joy to read (once you got to the second volume as the first part was rather slow for me).

Iconic, love how Darcy is a lot more animated than portrayed in the movie from 2005 and the show from 1995.

Mr and Mrs Gardiner are absolute sweethearts and this could be seen in the recent The Other Bennet Sister.

Mr Bennet is kind of a dumbass as not-so-subtly mentioned by Mrs Bennet in the beginning and by Lizzy towards the end.

All in all I’m so glad I finally got to read it!

I began to read Pride and Prejudice after a recommendation from my mum. I couldn’t put it down. I think that while it may have seemed rather slow at the start, I really appreciated the build-up and by the end of the novel you had developed a respect from each and every one of the characters. Although I generally prefer more gripping novels, the romance was very compelling. Feminism is explored very early on and even though, at the end of the novel it did seem as if all the women were married to respectable gentlemen the women were still very prominent and determined. I particularly loved how class and status affected the plot and how it was used to manipulate the characters’ personalities.

A perfect novel. One of my favourites. Every time I read it, I’m delighted anew by Austen’s characters and their idiosyncrasies. 

The character arcs are so satisfying, and the way the two main characters find their way towards falling in love is so beautifully realized and so relatable human.

Austen writes romance with intelligence, where the emotional payoff comes from growth, humility, and seeing someone clearly, not just from grand gestures. And yes, that opening line is unmatched. I reread this and still find new things to love every time, from the humor to the social commentary to the slow-burn romance that basically invented the blueprint.

While it is renowned for being a classic romance novel, Austen explores several important themes prevalent in the Regency era, from social class to gender roles. The novel centres around women needing to marry to not only comply with societal expectations but also ensure financial security throughout their lives, with characters constantly reminded not to marry beneath them regarding wealth and social status. This is interesting as Austen herself remained unmarried, thus you can somewhat see Austen expressing herself through the character of Elizabeth, a strong-willed, independent, and clever young woman, highlighting women should not be restricted within societal norms. There are layers to Austen’s commentary on gender roles in the nineteenth-century as she criticises the societal constructs of marriage and stereotypical gender roles, with men maintaining positions of power while women submit; Elizabeth, however, offers a sense of hope for female readers in the 1800s. Austen portrays marriages of convenience and desire to meet pragmatic societal needs through the Bennets, Collins, and Wickems, but contrastingly constructs a marriage between Elizabeth and Darcy based on love and respect.

I am already a loyal fan to the 1995 bbc series and was thrilled to discover that it's probably the best book to screen adaptation ever. Listening to this audiobook was like playing the show without looking at the screen, i had a blast!!
