Pride and Prejudice / Stolz und Vorurteil

I remember really enjoying the experience of reading it. But I don't know if I'd like it as much now. I think there are other female authors of the same period who wrote more thought provoking stories. But it is a great story and the writing was beautiful. ( Also +1/2 for the short chapters )

favs for sure. definitely see myself coming back to this. wanna explore more of this genre. from the plot to the setting to the dialogues to the characters, everything was on point. you get hooked on austen's writing after a while.

Originally read back in High school.... Just working through my own thoughts here more than a review. Very hard to enjoy this book as much as I did when I first read it some 15 years ago. Suppose it has to do with my increasingly lack of fiction, my reliance on "coding" and "scripting" to make sense of things in my daily life, and sadly maybe the lack of romance in my life. I kepy thinking about Lizzy/Darcy and their comparison to Benedit/Beatrice. There is so little direct dialogue in this book compared to "Much Ado about Nothing". And this explains a lot of of my lack of interest in the former, and and strong interest in the later. While it's interesting to explore Elizabeth's inner ideas on custom, civilities, sisterhood, men, money and family, all of this is compounded in the grotesque use of indirect language. It's very easy in this book to skip over a major plot point without realizing it was embedded in a tiny paragraph. I just feel like so much of the book is about the mishaps of her sisters. And maybe it's my own bias, where I find it silly that such important matters of marriage take place over a series of locations, letters and frankly silly nonsense. Let me not me without joy. There is plenty in this book to enjoy. When I'm able to get into one of the grooves of the novel, and most interested in the interactions with Elizabeth an Darcy, it becomes a fascinating/fun book. This isn't to say the book is bad. I've really enjoyed the adaptations i've seen of book. And further I do love the dynamic of a proud man and recalcitrant woman, and them falling in love. You know, the screw the world, screw the family, because we care about our relationship than you all. Ahhh..romantic. Anyhow. Definately recommend everyone give Austen a read. I was spurred on to read this book after hearing the Slate Political Gabfest revisit the book in a recent podcast. Cheerio for now Austen...though something tells me I will need to finally read "Persuasion" soon.

Iconic, love how Darcy is a lot more animated than portrayed in the movie from 2005 and the show from 1995.

Mr and Mrs Gardiner are absolute sweethearts and this could be seen in the recent The Other Bennet Sister.

Mr Bennet is kind of a dumbass as not-so-subtly mentioned by Mrs Bennet in the beginning and by Lizzy towards the end.

All in all I’m so glad I finally got to read it!

I began to read Pride and Prejudice after a recommendation from my mum. I couldn’t put it down. I think that while it may have seemed rather slow at the start, I really appreciated the build-up and by the end of the novel you had developed a respect from each and every one of the characters. Although I generally prefer more gripping novels, the romance was very compelling. Feminism is explored very early on and even though, at the end of the novel it did seem as if all the women were married to respectable gentlemen the women were still very prominent and determined. I particularly loved how class and status affected the plot and how it was used to manipulate the characters’ personalities.

A perfect novel. One of my favourites. Every time I read it, I’m delighted anew by Austen’s characters and their idiosyncrasies. 

The character arcs are so satisfying, and the way the two main characters find their way towards falling in love is so beautifully realized and so relatable human.

While it is renowned for being a classic romance novel, Austen explores several important themes prevalent in the Regency era, from social class to gender roles. The novel centres around women needing to marry to not only comply with societal expectations but also ensure financial security throughout their lives, with characters constantly reminded not to marry beneath them regarding wealth and social status. This is interesting as Austen herself remained unmarried, thus you can somewhat see Austen expressing herself through the character of Elizabeth, a strong-willed, independent, and clever young woman, highlighting women should not be restricted within societal norms. There are layers to Austen’s commentary on gender roles in the nineteenth-century as she criticises the societal constructs of marriage and stereotypical gender roles, with men maintaining positions of power while women submit; Elizabeth, however, offers a sense of hope for female readers in the 1800s.
