I used to think, even when I was young, that we’d all be much happier if they got a divorce

these friends would be crying at the terrible fear of their families breaking up, and all I could think was: I wish my parents would get divorced.

It seemed to me that if ever there were two people on the planet who should not have been together, it was my parents.

Still, even during the darkest of times, I never doubted her love for me.

Horrible as this is to admit, I think I cried less because my dad was dying than for the dad I had never had. I cried for the missed opportunities, for not having a dad who loved me unconditionally and unreservedly. I cried for not having a dad who accepted me exactly as I was.
