I remember having a pretty good opinion of Jane Healey as an author from reading "The Animals of Lockwood Manner" and I still think that prose-wise, she is excellent. But god, was this a bore. I loved the concept of it but I never really managed to immerse myself into the novel and I believe it was part because I never really cared about the characters. I know it is a bit overdone but perhaps if the novel had spent more time developing the Ophelia girls and had done away with the grooming plotline, it would have flowed better and created a more coherent narrative.
