Livingstone is a hearty soul and a true adventurer. It's difficult for me to see him leave behind his wife and children for years on end, and call him a hero. I know I live in a very different time and culture, but it's just hard to see it and sympathize. 
Having said that, I was amazed at his fearlessness and his absolute iron-will in the face of personal suffering. It's clear that he was willing to go and do what nobody else even considered. 
I know this book was meant to be a good introduction to the Livingstone, and that many details of his life were left out, but I did find it odd that much of what he is known for is exploration and not evangelism. It's clear to me that his work as an explorer was really his claim to fame, and that his goal was probably less about sharing the gospel and more about opening up the interior of Africa. I know it can be argued that he was paving the way for others to do the work (and the title of this book makes that clear), but going into the book I expected to see many more transformed lives. I think the one village chief is the only conversion mentioned in the book.
