The Last One at the Wedding

Just why - I feel like this whole book makes no sense with daughter being who she is. Why would she invite her dad to the wedding when she’s doing all of this plotting? Like obviously he’s gonna look into things and it fucked her over. This all was explained by the douche billionaire saying “people will expect him there”… like no they wouldn’t, that’s easily explained away since they don’t talk for three years. I came to like Abigail but her and Tammy PMO a lot with all they were putting on Frank going into the weekend. And the wrap up was that he’s basically starting over with Abigail as a new daughter to try and do better with since his bio daughter is a psychopath who was still a bitch at the end. Idk - just didn’t love this whole journey. Too fallible.

I liked the mystery and most of the characters.  This was a fun, easy read that had a captivating mystery and fun characters.

         My horror book club read Rekulak’s Hidden Pictures a while ago, and while many in the group didn’t enjoy it, I absolutely loved it.  It highlighted both the paranormal and the pure evil that we all know can exist in humanity today.  I was thrilled to see a Rekulak book show up in the options for the Book of the Month Club in October  of 2024 and couldn’t wait to dig in and see what this next book was going to offer. 

            And then I was just disappointed.  From start to finish.  Estranged family, eccentric aunt, shady rich family…it was a collection of overdone horror/thriller tropes.  Frank was painfully blind to his daughter’s shortcomings, and he seemed insanely naïve as well, making his character come across as a bumpkin…and not even a country bumpkin.  Frank’s sister was just ridiculous, especially with the insistence that a random child HAD to come to a destination wedding.  The random child might have been the most interesting character, but the way she was written pinned her as more of a caricature than a believable child.  I don’t even want to go into the remainder of the characters, because they are equally stereotypical and poorly written.  The plot was soft, there was zero suspense, and it was painfully obvious. 

            I wanted to like this one, but in the end, it just came up lacking.
