Some of the allegorical potency was lost in an “eyes wide open” take on the bureaucratic dystopia, but something pulpily earnest in their revolutionising was gained. Though there are still flashes of insight, into those discarded by the system particularly (that only this Red Side Story, eyes wide open, Eddie could have explored), and there is something very special also, maybe just personally, in there being an ending to Jane and Eddie’s story. Trapped in a system larger than even first thought, bound together by a commitment to make even the smallest possible change to that system, a resounding, definitive, conclusion is a gift I have long unhoped and am very, truly coveting.
