Emma Hamberg

A divorce as a slapstick-comedy. Agneta is 49 years old, bored and sad, and feels herself invisible among people. She seizes an opportunity to go to Provence, France, as an au pair. After arriving in Saint Carrelle, she discovers that the boy, who she was supposed to take care of, is actually an older man with some kind of dementia. The older man, Einar, is loved by the village dwellers and soon Agneta starts to appreciate Einar's wisdom. This novel is funny! The author utilizes a lot of material: the language barrier, Einar's memory/consciousness impairment, utilitarian Swedish culture vs French joie de vivre, Agneta's insecurities and habit to blurt out her thoughts, ... Agneta's husband Magnus is a caricature of a middle-age man in lycra, riding his bike and living healthy. Magnus sucks all fun out of life but even he is regarded kindly in the book: he knows languages, learns fast, and is active in life. Einar (and Fabian and the other French) is the opposite: he loves to eat well, drink good wine, and dance. Einar is a hedonist who sees the best in people, and doesn't care about norms and customs. "How do you do, my libido?" Agneta realizes that she doesn't know passion, and that she probably never actually loved Magnus. They were married because it was convenient and expected. Along the story, Agneta finds her libido and joie de vivre. She wants to look good, wants to have sex, and starts feeling visible and cared for. It's a beautiful fairy-tale told in a funny and wise way.
