I’ll be totally honest - I still don’t know how to feel about this book, but please do not regard this as an objectively bad thing. This novel has been quite the whirlwind, and has taken me on a journey that I am sure of neither the start nor finish. Cocteau’s writing style feels jumpy and inconsistent to me at times. The most thoughtful description of a character will be given and I will be absolutely hooked, but then it will change and carry on in a way that feels wishy-washy to me. The plot is absolutely bonkers and the way it is conveyed? Even more so. But the ending, in my opinion, is worth every last bit. Should you choose to read this novel front to back, you will be taken through the lives of some extraordinary characters who exist in a nonsensical place. To know where they end up after being sucked into their madness is both unsettling and rewarding.
