eh — at its best, could be a long form article; at its worst, this is a twitter thread. but maybe just not my cup of tea

i have so many words i want to say, but i don't really know where to begin. i've been typing and deleting and typing and deleting for a while now so i think i'll just leave it at this;
i love literature, i love greek mythology and i love being part of the lgbtqia+ community. this book was a warm hug of all three combined, embracing little lesbian me while being informative, serious and at times funny.
i will be obsessively rereading this for the foreseeable future.

Highlights

"all too often it still feels like lgbtqia+ characters are sidelined in fantasy stories where their trauma isn't the central theme, as though a book has to be queer for a reason; it has to be the central point of the story."

"it's not that there are no longer threats to the lgbtqia+ community, but that the continued presence of these attitudes is why the prominence of these retellings is so important."

"in other ancient sources, for example the iliad, there's a certain amount of reference to homoerotic tenderness."

“drawing a parallel between the modern and ancient experience of having your queerness dismissed because it isn’t relevant to men.”

“it is not uncommon to see the ‘maiden’ goddesses reimagined as lesbians by both modern writers and worshippers.”
