So I read The Lonely Doll and the Gift from the Lonely Doll before I delved into the life of the author of these “children’s books”. And they are strange little books indeed. And the Secret Life of the Lonely Doll takes you by the hand and leads you right into Dare Wright’s tiny New York apartment and then starts showing you pictures and starts piecing together letters from this person who knew her and stories told by that person who knew her mother– but at times you find that you just didn’t really listen very closely to the story being told because you just couldn’t keep from looking at the PICTURES. And you keep thinking about Grey Gardens and Little Edie and Big Edie Bouvier Beale and how this story of Dale Wright almost slipped away without ever being told because it was just under the radar. And even if Jean Nathan isn’t such a great writer you are very happy she wrote this because these are the kinds of stories that just have to be told.
