If I could give 0 stars, I would. This was one of the worst books I have ever read. It is supposed to be a prequel to the City of Ember, but only the last two pages contained any prequel information. No suspense was built and it was just a useless book with no real story. Also, the author seemed to forget who her audience is... her first two novels were geared toward older youth and young adult, this was written for 7 year olds. Waste of time. If you like the City of Ember books, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!

I'd give a lower rating if I could. This was not the prequel I was hoping for. It didn't tie into any of the other books until the last 5 pages, making the rest of it unnecessary banter. The ending felt rushed and not well thought out.

           Incredibly jumbled plot with only a hint of connection to The City of Ember at the very last chapter. I felt like this book wanted things to go in so many different directions with the religious following, the impending war, the list Nickie wants to fulfill, the girl in her grandfather's house, the codes from her father. It was just too much and didn't make any sense. Why would someone be afraid of a bracelet that makes noises? I don't understand. 

Overall, it didn't add anything to the series whatsoever.
