Sarsaparilla to Sorcery

Sarsaparilla to Sorcery

In this provocative new artist's book, painter and critic Jeff Gibson pairs open-ended, abstract photographic images with pages torn from encyclopedias from the 1950s, 60s and 70s.. By contrast, the appropriated pages present various groupings of natural and cultural material and phenomena, whose meanings are comparatively fixed by virtue of their taxonomic organization. Essay by New York journalist and critic Jeffrey Kastner, who writes regularly for Artforum, The New York Times and Cabinet, where he is Senior Editor.Jeff Gibson was born in 1958 in Brisbane, Australia. Now based in New York, he recently presented a work on the Panasonic screen in Times Square as part of Creative Time's 59th Minute program and exhibited at the New York Academy of Sciences. His critical writing has appeared in Artforum, Bookforum, Flash Art and Art & Text. Exhibition: Binghamton University, SUNY NY 9/28/07-11/3/07
