I love stories about toxic and dark friendships. I think the boarding school portion of the story could have been shorter for what it was, but I think that the author did a great job at portraying twelve year old boys at a boarding school. I liked the college years portion of the story but felt like it could have been longer. The third and final part of the story was more effective because of everything that came before it. I found myself caring for Alex and his family instantly. I liked the story overall but felt like the ending left a little to be desired. I wish this story had more depth and weight to it. I wish we got to see more into Alex and Darren’s state of minds. Darren’s character and motivations could have been fleshed out more. There were moments where his character felt like an evil caricature rather than a real person. The story itself was interesting but I feel like the author chose the simplest way to tell it. I’m still interested in Alex as a character, so I will eventually read the sequel to this novel. I liked this story, I just wish it was stronger and darker in some parts, especially the ending. I recommend this book for fans of serial killer stories.

This story was infuriating. But I suppose that's a good thing. There were plenty of times when I was so completely sucked into the happiness of the main character -Alex- that I could almost forget that bad things were coming for him. Almost. From the very start you can feel all the twists that Alex would suffer; you don't always see them coming and you don't necessarily know what they will be, but you can sense more tragedy is on its way. "Pressure" is the title of the book and that is exactly what you get- a small but constant pressure of bad gut-feelings that end in an explosive release. I was relieved to find a satisfying ending after all had happened, I think it ended in the best way that it could for the characters.
