2nd re-read: ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ I was so blindsided by the plot twist that I literally kept thinking about it so I had to dive in and figure out why or if it was just randomly dropped in, but nope, was just thrown off at the fact that we have an unreliable narrator in a fantasy setting so I never saw it coming. Still thoroughly enjoyed it and love the way it makes you question, what really makes a villain and what, if anything, makes them redeemable. 4.8 ⭐️ •Trials •Enemies to Lovers •Touch her and…find out. •Slow sizzling 🥵 burn •Fae/Human •Truly evil villain gets the girl Callie is a scientist who is working in a small country rural town in search of rare wild mushrooms. In her search she falls through a portal that lands her right to Mendax and the realm of the Unseelie Fae. Mendax is convinced Callie has been sent on a mission by the human race to kill him. The first 70 pages were a bit slow, but then literally, LITERALLY, could not put this book down. The enemies to lovers, like REAL enemies to lovers had me completely ensnared. The angst between these two—just wow. I did not know where this was going, I don’t know where I missed a clue or I don’t even know…All I know is that I’m going to need at least 3 business day to gather my feelings. All I know is that i loved these characters and I can not wait for book two. I just need more people to read it now so I can continue raving about it.

I loved this book. I felt like the descriptions were very well done and it made it very easy for me to be able to picture what was happening in my mind. I never expected the plot twist at the end and I cannot wait to read the next book.

What a book! This books surprised me in a crazy level! I need the sequel ASAP!!!

I have never DNF’ed a book before but this was just insanely cringy from the first sentence that I couldn’t bear to read past the first the five chapters. The main character is insufferably cringy whole being naive and pretentious, she lacks depth. the divulgence of her family trauma just shifts her character from overly cheery to depressing I cannot love anyone again cause I’ll get hurt with zero in between or transition between the emotional tones. the narration from her point of view was just too much. This book gives me wattpad vibes in the worst possible way. I couldn’t even make it to the plot beginning because it was unbearable, and I’m not someone who gives up reading books when I dislike them.

           I decided to DNF this book about 38% of the way through. I know some people think you shouldn't review a book you didn't finish, but I feel as though if a book was so bad you did not finish it, you need reasoning to back it up. So where do I begin?

First off, the writing was very poor. Sentences didn't flow together, things were often overly described, there were missing commas everywhere, commas where they weren't needed, extra spaces between a parentheses and the next word, etc. If someone edited it, it was poorly edited. On the VERY 1st page it says, “My finger’s poked the open, bloodied wound on my head as a firm reminder of its horrible capabilities.” It should either be “finger” or “fingers” (plural), not “finger’s” (possessive). Even if it was "...finger is..." it doesn't make sense. I thought there was no way this mistake could be on the very 1st page? So I put the sentence into various grammar checkers, as maybe I was mistaken, to which all of them changed it to "finger." I know some people can overlook these things, but they stick out to me like a sore thumb.

By page 5, I could already tell I was probably not going to finish this book due to the poor grammar, shitty writing, and cringey sentences. 

Now to every single "ick" moment I had:
1) the amount of exclamation points, why in the world were there so many?
2) the FMC compared herself to Barbie twice in the 140 something pages I read, ick.
3) she hates swearing? "Son of a garbage can!" "Mother forking crap on a cracker!" "Tuna-teeth!" "Holy esophagus...." "What the fork!?" These were actually phrases the FMC used. Ick.
4) "monster seed" no explanation needed, this is where the book completely lost me but I tried to keep going (obviously, I didn't keep going for very long)

Now, I did give this 2 stars, but I really wish I could give it more like 2.5. Why you might ask? Because I actually enjoyed the beginning of the story, where she was just a biologist working in a small town. As someone with a bachelor's in biological science who has worked in wildlife rehab, does wildlife photography, and overall loves all things nature, despite the poor writing and cringey phrases, I found it a decent read. However, after going through the fairy portal, it went downhill. I feel this author could probably write some pretty great books with the main theme being nature/animals/biology, but the fantasy aspect was garbage. 

Some of her descriptions of nature were beautiful. "The beautiful birds chirps and sang their happy wake-up call of tweets and twirls. The grass held drops of dew along with the orange blanket of a rising sun. The unmistakably crisp morning scent clung to the air like a promise, a whisper of fresh starts and pine." These sentences were *chef's kiss* and gave me a sense of comfort. 

One more positive thing before I go, Earl was described at one point as wearing "mushroom and acorn pattern" suspenders, I just imagine a sweet, old man wearing them and I think it's adorable.

I would not classify it as an Romantasy or Dark Romance, but more a dark Fantasy. It was interesting, and had me binge through it.

She is then assumed to be an assassin and therefore tortured and imprisoned.
