From the very beginning of this book it immediately gave me 2012 wattpad vibes. I felt that the boy who was “made” could have been Harry Styles of Cameron Dallas in a y/n fanfiction so I was very hesitant to continue because that isn’t exactly the kind of romance I’m looking for as someone in their 20’s. With that being said, I did appreciate a lot of other elements in this book. I really enjoyed the friendships we got to see and I think the banter between the two “narrators” of the story was enjoyable and realistic. As for the plot, I do feel as though it was very mediocre and the writing style along with that did feel very juvenile at times, hence the refrence to a fanfiction. I did appreciate the conversation had about sexuality and self discovery despite it being very underdeveloped for my liking. I think that the message on perfection was definitely the strongest out of the topics touched on in this book, and I do think that element of this book was actually very inspiring and motivational. 

Overall, I would recommend this book to people who like to read a more young ya feeling story but would say to probably stay away if that isn’t something you enjoy.

Overview



I didn’t know what this book was before I downloaded it. The book looked like a cute rom-com, and I really love that genre. What I didn’t know was that this was a feminist retelling of the movie Weird Science, so I can’t speak on how accurate this book is to that movie. I decided to have a new review system, where I discuss what this book did to earn a star in the rating from me. 



Plot

I’m giving the plot of this book a star because it was different. The plot of the story follows two girls who make a boy, and the boy ends up dating one of the girls. As the story progresses, we see more themes of love and finding out what you really want in life, and in a relationship. The story also follows the neighbor of one of the girls who make Guy, and you start to see their relationship bloom as the story progresses. I would say that the story has a happy ending because there is a sweet romance at the end. 



Characters



The characters were what kept me reading this. The principal character Kate, one of the girls who made Guy, was super into art and painting, and I loved seeing her passion for art. Libby, the other girl who made guy, was such a good friend because she stuck by Kate when others at their school were making fun of Kate, and not believing she had a boyfriend. Theo was so sweet, part of the story sees Theo and Guy hanging out at his house because he was staying there, so Kate’s parents wouldn’t find out about Guy. Guy himself was a fun character because he knew little, so you saw teenagers teaching him what it is like to be a teenager. They made him to love Kate, but while they were dating, you could tell how much he loved Kate, and how much he cared about her. This book had supporting characters that I wish we had spent more time with, like Alex. Alex was a guy who worked with Kate, and he was Theo’s friend. I enjoyed getting to know him in the scenes he was in, but I wish that we had seen him more across the book. 



Writing 



The writing in this book was fine, but I still think that it deserved a star. The way the story is written made sense for the way the story was told. The author is from Australia, and the setting of this story was England, so it was nice to see how other countries use certain words. There wasn’t anything I would change about the writing in this story. 



Enjoyment 



My last star is for enjoyment. I had fun reading this, and I’m glad that I read it. Most of the story was light and fun, which is what I’m looking for when I read a book of this genre. There were some elements that were serious, but you need the balance of the two to have the story be told. At the core, this is a YA Contemporary story, and so you won’t find much Sci-Fi here if that’s what you’re looking for. 



Pace



The pace was the reason this was not a five-star read. At times, I thought the pace was clunky, and that there were things that could have been done differently. I wanted some parts to be talk about more, and some that I thought could have been talked about less.

As an 80s kid with an obsession with Weird Science, I knew immediately that this was going to be the book for me! It was my first read by this author and it did not disappoint! I love feminist retellings and the main character Katie is a delight! You Were Made For Me has a diverse cast, which I applaud. And the references.....SO. MANY. REFERENCES! You're not going to miss out on anything if you don't get them, but what a great read for people like me who are old enough to understand them!

so the start was good, super funny then it started reminding me of when I was 16 and giving me hardcore flashbacks that I did not appreciate and then the ending was meh, it felt open ended and not fully wrapped up which annoyed me - overall think I would have loved this when I was about 14 but as a 21 year old this was just a kind of fun silly read.

This is my first 1-star review - I don't have much to say about this book though. All I have to say is that, personally, I found it extremely boring and juvenile. The writing style very babyish, when it is supposedly supposed to be from a perspective of a 16-year-old. I couldn't make myself go any further into this book than 4% in. (I love the book cover btw)
