The Naturals

If Criminal Minds was a book, this would be it.

Jess

Cassie Hobbes is not like most teenagers. Most teenagers don't lose their mother in a bloody, unsolved murder. Most teenagers can't tell who you are, where you're from and how you're likely to behave within moments of meeting you. And most teenagers don't get chosen to join The Naturals. Identified by the FBI as uniquely gifted, Cassie is recruited to an elite school where a small number of teens are trained to hone their exceptional abilites. For Cassie, trying to make friends with the girls, and to figure out the two very different, very hot boys, is challenging enough. But when a new serial killer strikes and Cassie is drawn into a lethal game of cat and mouse, she realises just how dangerous life in The Naturals could be.

The Naturals #1

I genuinely suck at mysteries. I didn't see this one coming from a mile away.

Literally, I found out the mystery before it was revealed only because it was revealed in the next two pages and the author had planted the seeds directly in my face.

Team Dean! I actually hate love triangles, so I hope that this doesn't triangle the whole time.

I loved all of the side characters, and am interested in what direction this series is going to go.

I always love the main characters back story, and the main mystery behind her mother's disappearance.

This book was just a whole lot of nothing. For a book about solving a murder it was really boring. The writing was flat and cringey at times. The plot was interesting in theory, but I just wasn’t invested because I didn’t like the way the book was written.

The characters were all flat and didn’t speak like real people, the dialogue left much to be desired. Lia pissed me off so much, Sloane was cute but the whole spewing stats thing got old quick, Michael gave me performative man vibes, and Dean was your typical grumpy love interest with a Dark Past™️ and daddy issues. Don’t really have anything to say about Cassie because meh.

Including a romance subplot, especially a love triangle, was silly in my opinion. It felt super half baked, and unnecessary. Also I couldn’t figure out how both boys fell in love with Cassie, like I said, everyone was incredibly one note and boring.

All in all, the story lacked a lot of depth, the characters weren’t written well, and all of that made the plot so uninteresting. I also had to suspend my disbelief a lot, which I’ll let slide if a book is good, and this was not. I obviously won’t be reading the rest of the series.

This book wasn’t great but it wasn’t bad??

I honestly don’t know how to feel about it because it didn’t have notably bad traits but it was terribly underwhelming.

My first problem is that I went in expecting a crime/mystery thriller with a found family and maybe romantic subplot but I was met with a romance book centered around a love triangle with a pinch of mystery blended in.

I liked all the characters BUT cassie and I truly can’t explain why? I guess it has to do with her wannabe angsty and complex persona when she’s truly just dry and boring with very badly written emotional constipation (I would know.) She also has a slightly pretentious vibe to her character regarding her profiling skills and is very dismissive of others feelings.

The UNSUB povs fell very flat and felt poorly thought out and badly written (I know it’s cassie talking to them but the voice and words used were very childish and unsmart for a supposed “natural”

The grand reveal was unfortunately less grand than I would have liked since I had guessed who it was a few chapters ago but I did like the way it was dramatically written and I liked the backstory.

The writing itself wasn’t great but it was very easy to read so kudos to that!!

My first five star of the year. This book was both addictive and an insanely easy book to read. The writing flowed well and I had to finish the book as soon as I started reading. The plot twists were unexpected and the chemistry of the characters were chef's kissed. Some chapters were so engaging that it gave me a few chills while reading. I highly recommend this book for those who are in a reading slump and want to start reading!

“i looked at dean, and suddenly, i could breathe.”

i HATE the love triangle trope when the fmc is clearly leading them both on. i’m so conflicted on who i want her to choose as well so that doesn’t help.

but individually i love all the characters and i feel like this plot is perfect as i love criminal minds. but i hope it gets better and the next few books don’t feel so rushed.

I was really excited to read this book after seeing it was recommended for people who liked criminal minds and AGGGTM but unfortunately didn’t really hit the mark for me. I found it to be trying too hard to be like Criminal Minds with a weird love triangle plot in between that was so sudden and made no sense to add.

I did like the aspect of breaking down behavioral analysis not just in killers but practicing on normal everyday people, I think that was probably the most fun rather than the moments the romance was brought in. Adding in a SK son into the mix made it pretty exciting and it did well overall in adding doubt to guess who the killer could be.

The writing itself is really simple and maybe too simple sometimes it was a bit hard to really set the scene before it moved on to something else, and I do get it IS a YA book so I try not to judge too hard…

Fun, unique, easy YA read. I really enjoyed the psychology driven story. Will continue the series.

Criminal minds but the cast is a bunch of hormonal teenagers /gen

I was honestly disappointed at the lack of

in the books. Everything felt so… clinical? I’m not entirely sure if it was intentional due to Cassie’s own quirks (profiler stuff) but personally felt that this falls into the category of books that would translate better if it was a different type of medium.

While I do get that since this is the first book, Barnes is still laying the foundation for the characters’ motivations, the found family trope this series is slowly building up to, and other plot points but so far, nothing has really endeared the characters to me — not Cassie, not the love triangle she was thrown into, not any of the other side characters that felt like caricatures of beloved characters from existing media (Spencer Reid, the spitfire asian trope, the boy with the dark secrets that everybody’s scared of, the list goes on).

Truthfully this was a really great book. I didn’t want to put it down (looks like I have to finish the series). I like that it was quick but still kept you engaged.
