This was a tough read at the start. Can’t really tell you why. Might’ve been too many books in too short a timeframe, but the first 20-30 pages were a draag. I was fighting to get through.

Getting past the initial character intros and plot setting, I ended up enjoying this quite a bit! I love stories where the house is almost a character in and of itself - Villa Taccola is the baddest baddie.

To get serious though; love the setting (give me 

), the characters for the most part are so dislikable, but that seems intentional, and there are heartfelt moments in between that makes the relationships feel organic and real.

The pacing, except for the slow start, is pretty good! Once it got over that, it felt like a steady flow and every chapter had enough suspense to keep one interested for more. Pretty satisfied with the ending too!

Doesn’t get quite the highest score but I’m still scoring it high.

for a horror book, it doesn’t really give you that chill. sometimes the descriptions were really good, but sometimes they were either so flat or so over the top that the vibe was just. nonexistent. the author can’t keep up the suspense for more than a page or two.

anna is annoying, and acts like a teenager (and her father also goes and tells her something like, “you will not talk to me like that, young lady!” which is. hilarious) so imagine my surprise when i realized she was over 30 years old. 

the ending was kinda hilarious idk. 

also. the inconsistency in anna’s ability to speak italian is crazy. first she serves as the family translator and can understand everyone fine and she can speak it, and then it turns out she’s learning it on DUOLINGO and that she actually doesn’t speak it well. and then there was the Spoiler“spell” with grammar mistakes that made me crack up. i’m giving the author the benefit of the doubt that she just wanted to show that anna’s italian wasn’t that good, but then again, Spoilerif she made a mistake in the spell, how the fuck did it work lmao. and also the fact that she found it in some old ass italian witchcraft book. like brother in christ how did you read and understand it with your duolingo italian. it would take you 5 years to get through.

dnf because i was bored. could i have finished it? sure. if i had literally nothing else to do. it’s not the worst book i’ve ever laid eyes on but i just got about 20% in before coming to the conclusion that finishing wouldn’t make me feel excited, accomplished, relieved, anything. so why continue?

easy and quick read. nothing really special in my opinion. every character was actually insufferable and there was some creepy moments but for a haunted house book it was not really frightening like i wanted it to be

as much as i hated the paces i loved this book

Not sure what this book was aiming for but it must have not been what it was sold on. I feel like if it wanted to take advantage of the setting and the final pay off, it would have spent more time breathing life into the house itself and building up the familial relationships between Anna and the rest of the Paces. What a waste, really.
