Deutschland is beautiful. Schön wäre das. Schön ist gar kein Ausdruck dafür.

Mit Dublin Il hat sich jedes europäische Land, das keine Mittelmeerküste besitzt, das Recht erkauft, den Flüchtlingen, die übers Mittelmeer kommen, nicht zuhören zu müssen.

Der Krieg zerstört alles, sagt Awad: die Familie, die Freunde, den Ort, an dem man gelebt hat, die Arbeit, den Alltag. Wenn man ein Fremder wird, sagt Awad, hat man keine Wahl mehr. Man weiß nicht, wohin. Man weiß nichts mehr. Ich kann mich selbst nicht mehr sehen, das Kind, das ich war. Ich habe kein Bild mehr von mir.

"Wohin geht ein Mensch, wenn er nicht weiß, wo er hingehen soll?" - Still thinking about this question after finishing the book, and to be honest I am not sure what to make of it. Yes - it does make you think and yes, I think it is a great book to just become more empathetic and there were moments that I was moved close to tears. But also, there are some flaws - its written from a white perspective, it contains some problematic terms (which I guess stems from the main character being a white cis male), it has some characteristics of a 'white saviour story'. Nonetheless, I do think it is a book worth reading and it is a book I wish lots of people would actually read because I think lots of people can connect to it (as I did, but I try to keep reflecting on this).
