So much for the meditation technique. I’ll be sure to inform Maggie that her woo-woo ways stand no chance against my hyper-vigilant work brain. I suppose I can rest when I’m dead.

Growing up, I was expected to be absolutely perfect in every way. It was drilled into me from as early as I can remember that love and attention came with a cost, and my perfection was the currency.

This earns me Gwen’s very first authentic laugh. She throws her head back and cackles, and the sound is music to my ears.

If I could bottle up Gwen’s laughter, I’d wear it around my neck and never take it off.

This woman’s slowly wrapping me around her finger so tightly that I’d do just about anything to make her smile.

“Listen to me, Gwen.” I lift her chin, so she’s looking at me when I speak. “I am so proud of you for keeping it together back there.” I fight back the tears as my throat tightens. I don’t want her to know just how scared I was because I need her to know that I’m strong enough to keep us both safe, but fuck, if it’s not the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.

“Who says you can’t have it all, Jack?”

“Well, I say there’s no rush. You’ve got to follow your heart and let yourself discover what you want through your own experiences. Then when an opportunity presents itself, you’ll know what you want because you’ve actually lived.”

I’d be lying if I said my body wasn’t screaming to feel her again, to be inside her again while I’m totally sober. I’ve never had such a strong pull toward anyone, but there’s something about how I feel when she’s near me. It’s like there’s this extra set of lungs in my chest and the weight of the world doesn’t feel so heavy.
