A very refreshing breakaway from the usual books I read. The vignette form is definitely a highlight of this influential book, however, I found it very disengaging. I loved the words themselves but struggled to stay engaged with the narrative as a whole.

I read this because DFW endorsed it and I was intrigued by the premise of this and Mr Kosinski's other books. I guess it's good, but I feel like it's a little too literary for me: by which I mean, it's not really my thing. I do, however, plan on reading  The Painted Bird and  Being There at some point.

A collection of absolutely hideous vignettes rendered in beautiful prose. Not for the faint of heart or the queasy digestion.

The whole book can be summed up, I think, this way: "Many of us could easily visualize ourselves in the act of killing, but few of us could project ourselves into the act of being killed in any manner. We did our best to understand the murder: the murderer was a part of our lives; not so the victim."

Steps is about being the murderer.
