Sing Me Forgotten

Isda does not exist. At least not beyond the opulent walls of the opera house. Cast into a well at birth for being one of the magical few who can manipulate memories when people sing, she was saved by Cyril, the opera house's owner. Since that day, he has given her sanctuary from the murderous world outside. All he asks in return is that she use her power to keep ticket sales high--and that she stay out of sight. For if anyone discovers she survived, Isda and Cyril would pay with their lives. But Isda breaks Cyril's cardinal rule when she meets Emeric Rodin, a charming boy who throws her quiet, solitary life out of balance. His voice is unlike any she's ever heard, but the real shock comes when she finds in his memories hints of a way to finally break free of her gilded prison. Haunted by this possibility, Isda spends more and more time with Emeric, searching for answers in his music and his past. But the price of freedom is steeper than Isda could ever know. For even as she struggles with her growing feelings for Emeric, she learns that in order to take charge of her own destiny, she must become the monster the world tried to drown in the first place.

Took a while to get into. About halfway thru it picked up and got a little more action packed. It was good but I didn’t love it. The love story lacked a bit.

I hate to bring the rating down but I really didn’t like this book. I considered giving it one star. The first half was just so strange and weird and it felt like little details kept getting thrown in randomly and I didn’t like it. The second half was more dramatic and adventurous and I did enjoy it a bit more but it still had random things just thrown in and it wasn’t enough to bring it up past 2 stars for me.

A lovely retelling (and gender bend) of Phantom of the Opera. It has moments of predictability but those do not spoil or ruin the raw emotions this story tells. Truly a bittersweet, and romantic piece that makes you enjoy storytelling, enjoy how art can inspire art, and PotO fans will not be disappointed to the several nods the author gives to the OG story and musical.

A phenomenal amount of worldbuilding and character growth packed into such a slim book. I can barely assemble my thoughts. Sing Me Forgotten is everything I hoped and dreamed from a Phantom of the Opera retelling. Emeric joins my highly selective list of book boyfriends. Isda is so mighty and I love her. I’ll be thinking about that ending for a while, even though I knew there’s no other way a Phantom retelling could end. Truly spectacular.

Isda should have died. Cast into a well for being one of the magical few who can manipulate memories when people sing, she was rescued by the local opera house's owner. All he asks in exchange for keeping her safe is that she use her power to keep his customers happy...and that she stay out of sight. Then Isda meets Emeric Rodin, and she finds in his memories hints of a way to break free of her gilded prison. Haunted by this possibility, she searches his mind for the answers she's craved her whole life. But even as she struggles with growing feelings for Emeric, she learns that in order to take charge of her own destiny, she must become what the world always feared she would be--a monster.
