What made me want to read this was the keywords SYRENS and PIRATES. They are two of my favorite things to read about. The only reason it got a high 4.5 stars is that it did take a few chapters for me to get into it and I did guess one of the twists. Brigid as the female lead and Caelum as the male lead, they did balance each other out perfectly.  I loved how both were also very protective of Sorcha one of the other syrens. Once I got to the end of the book I immediately put the next book on my TBR. I really need more of Brigid and Caelum, along with all their friends.  

 <spoiler>I wonder if some of the old sea goddesses will be coming back to help

What made me want to read this was the keywords SYRENS and PIRATES. They are two of my favorite things to read about. Once I got to the end of the book I immediately put the next book on my TBR. I really need more of Brigid and Caelum, along with all their friends.

That feeling when you find another beautiful seafaring gem!

While I admittedly don’t read books set at sea as often as I’d like, 

 is the type of book that perfectly shows why I like this sort of story so much: the dangers, the adventure, the seafaring role and the potential for romance between rivaling species. (Mermaid/sirens vs. Humans is a classic indeed, and one I love!) This book gave me all of that, balancing a dark atmosphere with fun moments of camaraderie and banter that made the pages fly by. It was almost like reading a more mature, darker, and steamier version of 

, which is only one more reason why I loved this book. (Like I said, a classic.)

Though I enjoyed the first part of the book where we get to see the protagonist, Brigid, at sea with her syren sisters, the moment I really got invested in the story was when Brigid meets Caelum again and the focus moved to the adventure on land. Of all the characters, Caelum was without a doubt my favorite. He’s 

 type of character: strong when he needs to be, protective, but also kind and very loyal to his crew—and later on, to Brigid. I loved the relationship between Caelum and Brigid because—despite the attraction being evident from very early on—the author didn’t rush the pacing of it. I enjoyed the banter, but also the uncertainties they both had because of their obligations—one to her syren way of life and the other to his crew. It made it all the more satisfying to see them falling head over heels for one another, and I can’t wait to get more of that relationship in the next book! Which I need. Soon. Please! The book ends on a cliffhanger that had me screaming at the page.

Apart from the romance, I also really enjoyed the friendships in the book, especially the one between Brigid and Sorcha, one of the newest syrens who Brigid takes under her wing and grows very attached to. This particular relationship tugged at my heart.

, with bloodthirsty syrens, dashing rogues and a mildly steamy romance to keep the blood flowing, I highly recommend trying this one.

This book has everything an adventure at sea needs: dangers at sea, dangers on land, and a cast of deeply addicting and flawed characters to keep the story interesting. While this installment only scratches the surface of the world-building potential, I’m already obsessed with the darkness of the syren lore and how it connects with the superstitions tied to women at sea. These syrens are true predators, and I loved seeing this aspect of their way of life as much as I did seeing the camaraderie and sisterhood that links them in their everyday life.

The characters were certainly the highlight of the novel. Brigid and Caelum were incredible protagonists! They’re both strong and determined in their own right, but they also don’t hide their vulnerabilities, which made them that much more likeable and relatable. I especially loved the way the author handled the descriptions of Brigid’s past trauma and the anxiety that she carries with her from that moment on. It’s no surprise that this incredible characterization also brought to a fantastic romance. I will never stop advocating for the superiority of stories where acquaintances/friends grow estranged only to meet again when they’re older. The chemistry between Caelum and Brigid jumped off the page from their very first scene together, and the author did an incredible job at pacing this relationship, balancing the attraction with moments of misunderstanding and tension. The few steamy moments between them promise such great things from the sequel! Sequel that I will need in my hands effective immediately thanks to that fantastic cliffhanger, which was the perfect gasp-out-loud ending to a book that was hard to put down.
