A really brilliant fantasy series now Despite the unnecessary over description of women's physical attributes whenever he meets them and how every woman is "the most beautiful", I enjoy everything else about this series. I enjoy how it has a wonderfully imagined lore from clearly a very creative mind and I love Harry Dresden's laid-back and nonchalant reaction to everything around him. It's very unique and unlike anything I've read before. I know I have a long way to go, but I very much look forward to reading the follow-up books.

This book leverages on the previous ones and tells a delightful and thrilling adventure. I'm glad I decided to dive into the Dresden Files. (Try the audiobook version)

Harry Dresden is up to his neck in foes. This time Dresden's foes are, well, everybody. The vampiric Red Court, who want revenge for the events in Grave Peril; his own White Council of wizards, run by the usual cowardly appeasers and bureaucratic weasels; and last but not least, the Sidhe, the creatures of the fey, whose opposing houses of Summer and Winter keep one another equally balanced so as to avoid too much power in any one set of hands. But the balance has been disrupted. Someone has murdered the Summer Knight, that realm's champion to its queen, Titania. The Winter Queen, Mab, has been blamed, and she makes Harry an offer he pretty much can't refuse: if he helps her to find the Knight's murderer and clear her name, she'll help him. All Harry has to do is help avert an all-out war between Summer and Winter. No problem! Like usual, spending time with Dresden and his wizard problems turns out to quite fun, and quite enthralling. Butcher - for as much as he known for making escapist noir/urban fantasy - is a craftsmen of character. He's also great at employing action. It's never too gritty and has a lot of humor. It's that careful balance between suspense and wit where both can work that Butcher has a true gift for. Humor in these kinds of fantasy novels can all too easily call attention to itself — The Dresden novels, for the most part, avoid the scourge of postmodernist pretension. Read for wizards, fey, and Chicago-above-Chicago, hilarious hijinks, and the hardboiled fantasy noir. Stay for the random fight inside a Wal-Mart.

I really enjoyed the courts of Summer and Winter Sidhe... I think Dresden nailed how the Sidhe are not the cheerfully sprites we think of today thanks to Disney and whatnot making faeries all cute and adorable. Oh they are cute and adorable but that's just to sucker you in.

this is definitely my favorite book in the series so far, was almost at 4 stars, but then ... we got this old girlfriend (and current??? girlfriend???) drama, and not to be a hater but i'm gonna just knock off a whole star for them lol. just such weak female characters, they're not in any way bad but they're also not in any way good lmfao anyway this was a lot of fun just like the other 3 and i feel like the story is beginning to pick up here, getting to finally see the council, and some really fun dynamics with the faerie courts which i super enjoyed, especially the climactic fight. despite the frustration with the heteronormativity of it all, and how i CAN see that harry's character is developing it's just sloooooow af, it's not really souring my experience or taking me too much out of the story. i'm just having a damn good time, and even though i'm still stuck at 3 stars 4 books in to this series, i'm not upset about it at all and am definitely continuing

I'm having so much fun with this series! :D This has got to be the best book so far. I absolutely loved the characters and the plot. I guess I have a weakness for well-put-together faeries. Not much to really say, though. I hope Elaine has some future appearance in the story, because I thought that she was the only (very, very small) flaw in this book. I just wanted her to be developed a bit more! I mean, Butcher barely spent half a page on Elaine and Harry's history before diving straight back into the action. Anyway, I loved it! I'll be reading the next book really soon!

Back On Form Dresden Files is back on form with this entry. I still feel it's yet to find its feet as an entire entity, but it is definitely getting there slowly. Now we have more recurring characters from previous books, as well as knowledge that things are not necessarily reset and there are real consequences fit the actions in previous books - unlike a lot of episodic series out there. - it's really begining to flesh out.

As all of The Dresden Files, this was another fun, fast-paced supernatural detective book. I read them (even though there are things in them I might object to) because their pacing is great & I love how in this long-running series develops the characters & has such amazing world-building.

7.43 on CAWPILE While this book still carries many of the Dresden files problems, they’re getting more mild and the books are getting more enjoyable. I’m definitely looking forward to continuing and seeing the plot become more in depth and Dresden grow a little.
