The Kingdom by Jo Nesbø is a real read in the line of psychological thrillers. Plotting and character development blend into a suspenseful, addictive read. It would not be far from necessary to use less than the word 'masterful' while describing Nesbø's ability to spin a compelling tale around themes of guilt, redemption, and family secrets. From start to finish, readers are gripped by the tension between the brothers in this unnaturally atmospheric town. The twists and reveals in the book come out incredibly well in a way that is really engaging and keeps it thought-provoking right till the end. The depth of the character exploration, and more importantly, the plot carried on the tension alone makes it more than worthwhile, though a little contrived. Taken all in all, The Kingdom deserves a full 4.5 out of 5 stars for its engrossing storyline and complex characters who are simply the handiwork of Nesbø's mastery.
