Janice Hopper

This is a book in the "something bad happens and children are thrown into peril" English genre. It's well-done for that. The kids are plucky and sweet, the villains are villainous, and the helpers are helpful and good. It's not quite as charming as the E. Nesbit stories, but it's not bad.

Love this classic. The wolves are a metaphor for the evil characters that arrive. 
They plot, they hurt, they take it all. 
The child who is left at home will suffer and the parents who left may never return. The girl finds allies, but it's not easy to fight back the aggressions of such villains.
The author began the novel thinking of writing a parody to the gothic novel, including all characteristic elements but with the tragedies in her life, it became infused with her experiences and hardship too. 
Awsome gothic paradigm novel.
