I enjoyed her writing, but was less than enthralled with the subject matter. I'm just not very interested in the social lives of Sacramento's inhabitants in the 1960s.

Great portrait of California in the 60s.

First time reading Joan Didion. My favorite story was the first one- I enjoyed reading her impressions of 1960s San Bernadino and thinking of all my grandparents living there at the same time. The descriptors of place and time she used captured some element of the california myth- the slowness, the still, the restlessness of the people.

Loved this. Fantastic narration from Keaton and it’s just fascinating subject matter. Subjects written about as old as early 60s, to 20 + later. Proves she can write about just about anything I’d be game.

I get lost in the intriguing structure of her sentences, and beauty of imagery, only to have to go back and re-read the section to focus on what she's actually saying. When putting the two together, message and form, a beautiful sensation of being lost in story becomes overwhelming and I imagine I can FEEL what it might have been like to live in California in the 60's.

is it good journalism? absolutely not. does the writing slap? of course
