I read Babe in Boyland as part of a challenge I set for myself to read more contemporary books. 
Let me tell you, if you don’t read a lot of Contemporary Books and want to get more into them, Babe in Boyland is an EXCELLENT place to start.

This book was fast-paced and funny. The characters were all enjoyable and witty, and the premise/plot was so cute and fun. Plus, I am IN LOVE with this woman’s writing. After reading Babe in Boyland, I went and immediately checked out all the other books my library had by Jody Gehrman, and for each one, the writing was so good!

Jody Gehrman has a talent for making me laugh our loud in public. Which, let me tell you, is a VERY good thing.

I LOVED this book, but I was unsure of how to rate it, so I settled for a common ground. 

I got to admit I regularly don't read books like these, mostly because I feel I've read my fair share of them. And when I mean this kind, I mean the fluffy, high school books. But I felt I understood Natalie from the start because I sometimes questioned myself the same things she did & felt similarly like her. I obviously never went to the same extent as she for I barely survived the questioning part.

Regardless of all that, I must admit I loved the story. It was incredibly clichéish & silly at times, but it was fun to read about. Jody Gehrman took a cliché, gave it some latin spice and a tiny bit of swearing in spanish & Babe in Boyland was born. I found myself laughing at times all alone in my room. It was sweet, innocent and great to read about.

Still some clichés made me want to scream at loud, hence my rate. So, anyway DON'T listen to me and think it will suck a bit, but DO listen to me and read it. I swear it WILL surprise you!

After reading the blurb of this book all I could think about was the Amanda Bynes movie where she goes undercover to a boarding school pretending to be her brother, just so she can prove that she can play soccer as well as any boy. I loved the movie so, naturally, I picked up the book. 

Babe in Boyland had the same kind of idea as 'She's the Man' but was different. The main character Natalie hasn't got much relationship experience herself but she writes her school newspaper's relationship column under the name Dr. Aphrodite. When she begins to get negative emails from the male readers who say that she has no idea about guys, Natalie makes has an idea to prove to her readers that she does. With the help of her two Bff's Natalie sheds her girly persona (and most of her hair) to go undercover at nearby Underwood Academy as a boy. 
 
The problem is Natalie may be falling for her yummy room mate Emilio and mean girl, Summer Sheers could blow the whole thing.

Babe in Boyland was one of those books which can keep you grinning all the way through. The situation which Natalie got into as a boy were simultaneously awkward and funny. The whole thing with naked Max and his but cheek was a good example. Also the time when Josh walked in on Chloe, Darcy and Natalie in a compromising position in the prop closet. Oh! And the whole flatulence issue with Chloe and Josh just made me feel slightly repulsed.

A great book with an amazing cover! A great read.

Divertente, ironico, questi sono i primi due aggettivi che mi sono venuti in mente per descrivere questo libro. In fondo quello che fa Babe non è forse il sogno di ogni ragazza? Capire cosa pensano davvero i nostri compagni dell'altro sesso. A questo proposito ricordo che i primi anni delle superiori, un gruppo di miei compagni perse da parte me e altre mie amiche e ci chiese senza tanti complimenti "Perchè le ragazze devono sempre andare in bagno in gruppo?". Sembra una domanda banale, ed effettivamente lo è, ma giuro che non abbiamo saputo cosa rispondergli se non "Beh se ti interessa tanto puoi venire con noi". Mentre leggevo questo libro, mi è venuto in mente questo episodio e mi son trovata a sorridere ancora a distanza di tanto tempo. 
Natalie frequenta il primo anno di liceo e gestisce la rubrica dedicata ai problemi amorosi del giornalino della scuola. Quando le vengono rivolti dei commenti in cui viene accusata di non sapere nulla sui ragazzi e di dare dei consigli inutili, comincia a chiedersi cosa vogliono veramente i ragazzi e il significato di alcuni loro atteggiamenti. Visto che i ragazzi della sua scuola non la prendono sul serio, Natalie decide di trasformarsi in un ragazzo e di passare una settimana nella scuola maschile della città: l'accademia di Underwood. Così Natalie si trasforma in Nate, ma come fare quando ci si innamora del proprio compagno di stanza? 
Questo libro è stata una vera e propria scoperta, non ne ho sentito molto parlare su internet, anzi a dire il vero ne ho sentito parlare solo da una persona. Ma la sua recensione è stata sufficiente per farmi capire che volevo leggere questo libro. Non me ne sono pentita, anzi sono stata felice di averlo letto. A volte servono anche letture leggere, non troppo impegnative, ma allo stesso tempo così carine e divertenti da non riuscire a smettere di ridere. In questo l'autrice è riuscita a pieno nello scopo. Natalie si ritrova catapultata in un mondo totalmente maschile, in cui deve capire cosa è lecito e cosa no, cosa fa e cosa non fa un ragazzo. E' stato esilarante vederla barcamenarsi in questo mondo e capire che, sotto sotto, i ragazzi e le ragazze non sono poi tanto diverse. Ma capisce anche una cosa ancora più importante: per conquistare un ragazzo non serve fare la gallina, truccandosi e ritoccandosi i capelli un milione di volte per sapere se sono perfetti, ma essere semplicemente se stessi.
Nella sua settimana come Nate, Natalie imparerà molto più di quanto credeva. Conoscerà meglio se stessa e si innamorerà del suo compagno di stanza Emilio. Per la prima volta non civetterà con un ragazzo per cercare di piacergli, ma sarà semplicemente se stessa come non era mai stata in altri suoi appuntamenti.
Nonostante sia un romanzo senza troppe pretese, che si legge velocemente, l'ho trovata una lettura molto simpatica e soprattutto semplice se si vuole iniziare a leggere in lingua ;).
