The Devils

This really was a little bit like Suicide Squad but make it medieval fantasy and tied to a gender-bent Catholicism where the pope is a 10 year-old girl and all the bishops are women. I really feel like you got to know the characters well and connect with them along their quest and they were such interesting people! I really loved the beginning and the end of this book but the middle did drag a little bit for me. It was almost too fast-paced and the situations they kept finding themselves in felt a little bit repetitive. Part of it added to the comedy of the overall story, but the rest made me feel like I had to slog through it. There were a couple of good twists at the end too (one I guessed and one I did not). Fun read overall and curious what the next book will be!

I think I was most impressed by the way Abercrombie plays with language throughout this book without it becoming a cheap trick. Clever, well-paced, great holiday reading: a jaunty dungeon crawler meets expedient theological bureaucracy.
