god im sorry but this was so boring. 3/5 for the meticulous research, but this book was so hard to finish. i think i was expecting it to be more of a social history, but it feels more like a list of facts than anything else. soooo so many political/social issues that felt completely unexplored (hardly any analysis of race??? and the intersection of gender/race/sexuality????). just overall quite disappointing, unless you're looking for something that resembles a wikipedia page.
