'The sight is immediately spectacular [...] The panels blaze and twinkle in a fantastic array of colours, acid pink to neon green and iridescent turquoise.' -- Laura Cumming (The Observer)To coincide with the first European solo exhibition of works by Korean artist Hyon Gyon (b. 1979), Parasol unit foundation for contemporary art has produced this extensive publication featuring full-page colour reproductions of exhibited works as well as additional artworks from her oeuvre.Known for her intricate and highly expressive works, often like mid-burst manifestations of explosive raw energy, Gyon combines traditional Korean textiles, Japanese paper and paint together with various less conventional materials to create her paintings and sculptural installations. She explores themes of socio-cultural identity, grief, anger and sexual politics. All this is inspired by Korean shamanism and its rituals. This publication includes insightful essays by Donald Kuspit; American art critic, poet, and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Art History and Philosophy at the State University of New York at Stony Brook; Bartlomiej Dobroczynski, Associate Professor at the Institute of Psychology, Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland; and a foreword by Ziba Ardalan, Founder/Director of Parasol unit.Curated by Ziba Ardalan, the exhibition and its accompanying publication give an overview of Gyon's intricate sculptures and paintings created between Korea, Japan, New York and Poland.Published on the occasion of the exhibition Hyon Gyon at Parasol unit for contemporary art, London (23 January - 31 March 2019).
