De boog kwam omhoog tot Will wist dat hij precies de juiste hoek bereikt had. Als iemand hem op dat moment gevraagd had hóé hij dat wist, had hij hem geen duidelijk antwoord kunnen geven. Het was gewoon instinct, geholpen door jaren van trainen. Hij hield automatisch rekening met de wind, de richting ervan én de kracht. Even wachtte hij nog. De linkerhand, die de boog vasthield, was helemaal niet gespannen; door de vorm van het hout kon hij de boog stevig vasthouden zonder te hoeven knijpen. De wijsvinger van zijn rechterhand lag tegen zijn mondhoek, de pees met drie vingers volledig uitgetrokken, één boven en twee onder de pijl.

Hij ademde rustig uit. Vagelijk voelde hij zijn eigen hart kalm slaan. Toen liet hij de pees gaan, allebei zijn handen ontspannen als daarvoor. De boog bewoog alleen aan de uiteinden. Het hele proces, vanaf dat hij de boog omhoog had gestoken, had nog geen vier seconden geduurd.

Het was ironisch, maar juist door jaren oefenen mislukte het schot.
