La historia gira en torno a dos adolescentes, en su último año de secundaria, que viven en Orlando, Florida: Quentin Jacobsen ("Q"), y Margo Roth Spiegelman. Aunque Q está perdidamente enamorado de Margo, pertenecen a "dos mundos diferentes". Ella es popular y llamativa mientras que Q es un poco nerd.Sin embargo, una noche Margo se presenta en casa de Q, vestida de Ninja, para que la ayude a acometer una venganza en contra de su novio (Jese), quien la está engañando con Becca. Después de escabullirse en casa de éste, lo hacen también en las de otros personajes, dejando marcas de grafitti con una letra M, o peces muertos.Al día siguiente, Margo no se presenta a clases, y tres días después sus padres denuncian su desaparición, cosa que ha ocurrido otras veces. Q está convencido de que Margo le ha dejado unas pistas para encontrarla y decide seguirlas. La última de ellas conduce hasta una "ciudad de papel" en el Estado de Nueva York, llamada Agloe.Vuelos a Paris en Oferta. Súper Descuentos Reservando Online!Q convence a sus amigos, Ben Starling y Marcus ("Radar"), y a la mejor amiga de Margo, Lacey, para que partan a buscarla, viajando en auto en sólo 24 horas desde Florida a Nueva York. En Agloe encuentran efectivamente a Margo, que estaba viviendo en un granero destartalado. Pero nada de lo que Q pensaba parece que es cierto, en cuanto a las razones de Margo para desaparecer, las supuestas pistas y sus sentimientos.Contar más sería arruinarles la lectura de Ciudades de Papel, de John Green, aunque adelantamos que el final queda un poco sujeto al criterio del lector, es decir, el autor prefiere no atarlo por completo.

It struck me as somewhat unfair that an asshole like Iason Worthington would get to have sex with both Margo and Becca. when perfectly likable individuals such as myself don't get to have sex with either of them--or anyone else, for that matter.
