John Grogan

Anne Collins

A reader adaptation of the story of Marley, considered the world's "worst dog," and all of the adventures he has with his human family. Includes activites and a word list at the end of book.

Marley & Me

This No.1 Sunday Times bestseller tells the heart-warming tale of how a wiggly yellow fur ball of a puppy could grow into a barrelling, ninety-seven pound stramroller of a Labrador retriever who would prove that unconditional love comes in many forms. John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Along comes Marley, mischievous, hyperactive and so unruly he is expelled from obedience school. How could they possibly know that this incorrigible dog could teach them more about love for life than they could hope to teach him? Since becoming a major motion picture, starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, this heart-warming and unforgettable story of a family and their haphazard dog has become a timeless family favourite.

Life and Love With the World's Worst Dog

Marley and Me

Finished this book today and was absolutely sobbing. I had seen the film first so I knew exactly what to expect, but the book was a completely different story all together. I loved it!

Time passes quite quickly between chapters so you almost don't want to continue reading to keep book Marley alive. But I was so into it I couldn't put it down.

A moment that really got to me towards the end is when Marley could no longer climb the stairs because of his hip so he slept downstairs for the first time. Jenny and the kids were away so it was just John and Marley snuggling up together in the living room, a moment that will never be that moment again. And John says to Marley something along the lines of 'when you're ready to go, you'll let me know right, buddy?'. I think from that moment, I had a lump in my throat which didn't go until I finished the book.

I've never had a dog, but this book made me want to mourn the dog I will eventually have. All dog stories end in sadness but its not about the destination, it's about the journey we take.

I decided to read this during the month of the one-year anniversary of my dog Biscuit's passing. Crazy decision right? Reading this book, I laughed, I cried, and I reminisced.

Throughout the book, I laughed a lot at Marley's antics. I was reminded of Biscuit's puppy antics. As I read the section where Marley slowed down with age, I could clearly remember what watching that happen was like. This book was a touching and entertaining read about life as a dog owner and the unconditional love that dogs can give.

I laughed...I cried...I smacked my boyfriend for laughing at me as I cried while reading...and then I laughed and cried some more. After all was said and done I gave my 2 dogs big kisses and hugs knowing I will feel the same when their time comes. This is a great story for all dog lovers, and for non-dog lovers to have a sense of why we love our beasts!
