The Constant Gardener

The book takes a good 40% of its length to very slowly build the characters and setting. During this time you'll be subject to the inane conversations of characters who are almost wholly detestable.

It does pick up nicely after that point but it's quite unforgivable to devote so many pages to occurrences and characters of little consequence.

The only truly likable person in the whole book is the one who's dead 

It's not to say it's bad though. It does end up being a fun thriller, just with too much cruft.
