The fact that I have read every single thing John Sandford has written aside, Lucas Davenport never disappoints. I think this latest story is wonderful. Of course it is full of the things you expect from Sandford: a fucked up villain, his misfortune in catching Lucas' attention, and several tense chases, escapes, and a showdown. This time though the question of what Lucas might do when his political allies leave the BCA looms as a bit of white noise behind the story. It has been a part of the last few books, sort of the end is nigh, kind of thing. And throughout this one, his friends keep trying to get him to shine a little spotlight on himself, and are frustrated that he just keeps a steady course chasing down his asshole criminal instead of saving himself. But this is Lucas Davenport. He wants to chase down criminals, and though he's adept at the political stuff, he doesn't particularly like it. The books ends the way I would expect it to end for Lucas. And if, God forbid, John Sandford decides to never write another Prey story, it was a satisfying resolution. But, seriously, please don't stop writing about this character!! I'd be lost!
