Lennie liked to pet things, whether it’s a dog or a mouse, he desired companionship. To me, the mice of men are the lonely people among the non lonely. Candy is old, Crook is segregated. In the cabin, Crook suggests to Lennie that George may leave him. This is where Lennie confronted his biggest fear, loneliness, and Crook is the embodiment of Loneliness. That’s why the story of living on a farm comforts Lennie, as he knows he wouldn’t be alone. Lennie died knowing he wasn’t alone. That’s nice to think about.

I cannot help but love the intention and attention to detail with which Steinbeck writes. A true master of literary devices, executed clearly yet elegantly and cleverly. His writing also has such fantastic sense of what makes a story and a scene impactful and affecting.
