While the overall atmosphere of The Night Gardener is similar to Mexican Gothic by by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (2020), the nuts and bolts of the narrative draw from a variety of classic sources (all named in the afterword). While reading, I was most drawn to the similarities with The Turn of the Screw by Henry James (1898). The feeling of familiarity is strong enough that I plan to reread the novella soon.

Wow, this was great! I loved the concept, it was so magical and creepy. There was definitely a lot to unpack in this book, especially lessons such as storytelling vs lying and the impact that greed has on people.

I do wish we got more background on the title character, I was really intrigued and wanted to know more details!! (view spoiler)[One thing that really struck me was that Kip seemed to understand that the Night Gardener was just doing his job to protect the tree. I really liked that, because I had a feeling from the beginning that he wasn't actually evil. Of course, trying to kill people is not good, but this is why I really want to know more about the connection between him and the tree! Like, maybe he was given eternal life in exchange for taking care of the tree or something? I don't know, I was just really intrigued and I wanted more! (hide spoiler)]

Overall, I thought it was a really well-written story and I quite enjoyed it!

Oh, and the cover is absolutely stunning. The whole book is super aesthetically pleasing, and it even extended to each chapter page having branches and leaves at the top and bottom. Sooo cool.

I absolutely loved this book. it may be a bit too scary for kids though... although I always enjoyed spooky stories, even as a child, so maybe that's just the right book.

As there are so many great reviews and the summary is really interesting, I decided to pick it up and kind of disappointed. BUT it is actually not bad. 

I expected this book to be dark and creepy, because it's mentioned in many of the reviews here. Well, talk about it being creepy, it was definitely kind of creepy from the beginning and atmospheric throughout. However, 60% in and I did not find this book creepy, CREEPY. It is good and interesting that keep me wanting to read more but at the same time the beginning part of the book was kind of so-so for me. 
Not until 30% towards the end that the book became to me, REAL GOOD and dark. So, I am happy with the last part of the book. Hence 3 stars.
