You know, this was a really solid ending to the trilogy for me. As someone who detested Nathaniel in the first book, I really feel like he did a lot of growing as a character, but not in ways that seemed unnatural or impossible. I have to hand it to Jonathan Stroud for handling that as well as he did. I also enjoyed having Kitty come up alongside Nathaniel, from random girl on the streets in book one to the only reason humanity doesn't get enslaved by demons in book three, I liked how her storyline lead her, though she definitely didn't get as much growth as Nathaniel did. Bartimaeus was also particularly consistent, which makes sense for someone who's 5,000+ years old. You're not going to change over the course of five years that much when you've lived that long.

I loved the explanation of what happened with Ptolemy and how it affected Bartimaeus. It had never struck me as odd that Bartimaeus was so fond of Ptolemy, but Bartimaeus did seem more sympathetic than all the other djinn we came across in general, considering they were all typically all too happy to eat him at the earliest convenience.

I really have to say, the twist in the story (view spoiler)[where Makepeace turned out to be a villain (hide spoiler)] was not a shock to me, though I hadn't considered how he planned to make his move. (view spoiler)[Being possessed by djinns that humanity spent their existence exploiting and enslaving really wasn't the cleverest of ideas. These wizards coulda used some dang common sense. I have to say, I hadn't anticipated the ending at all, though it did seem a fitting one. Not many books make that dramatic leap. (view spoiler)[It's not often you see the main human character die at the very end without a dramatic return. I'm not sad, per se, because honestly I was never that fond of Nathaniel, but he had come so far in the end that it was a pity to see that growth and momentum into a decent person truly ended. I am somewhat glad that, despite their growing affections, Kitty and Nathaniel didn't end up together. She legitimately deserved better. Who knows though. Had he lived, perhaps he might have been able to grow into someone worthy of such affections. (hide spoiler)]

I read this series of books when I was younger and was instantly hooked! I love the story of Nathaniel and the character of Bartimaeus is genius! I love the way that the chapters skip from Bartimaeus to Nathaniel and I love the added footnotes. I've found in some books, footnotes can be annoying but in this case they were an added joy! I recommend this series of book to people of all ages and I desperately want to read them again.

Just finished reading this. Stared at the last page, the last paragraph, the last line for about five minutes. And then I cried. Rarely does a book affect me this much emotionally. What a spell-binding, amazing, compelling read. Brilliantly convoluted characters, a highly imaginative story-line, and a hauntingly perfect ending. Do yourself a favour and read this trilogy.

2020 upd: I'm admitting here and now - I was a fool. That's definitely a case of "it's not you, it's me". I just didn't get the book then, but now!.. now I'm ready, and my heart is broken.
So glad there is one more book, I hope to spend some more time with Bartimaeus, because I just love the sass.

2017 - what the hell is this ending?!? :( I did like the book though... hm.

The series was good and they definately got increasingly better throughout the books with Ptolemy's Gate being the best of the trilogy. I didn't really like Kitty throughout the first 2 books or the beginning of the 3rd but by the end she was an acceptable character. Having her go through Ptolemy's Gate was pretty cool and (view spoiler)[ bonding the demons to the humans was intense haha especially having Nat and Bart's thoughts combined.  (hide spoiler)] I won't go into what happened much but the goverment traitor completely took me by surprise. How was a bit obvious, who was a bit puzzling till the 'experiment'.

I thought the ending was too abrupt and didn't really like that but the rest g the book was still awesome enough to get 5 stars.

           This was the book that I read the first two books to get to. I'm glad that the author finally got around to actually making you like the main characters AND have them work together. I am disappointed that it didn't turn out all that great for one them. That being said I still feel that the other books lay important ground work for making this one really work, so I can't just ignore them entirely.
