Wow, I must admit I never anticipated the way this book unfolded itself. Like most of José Saramago's novels, I was enjoying the reading fairly well throughout most of the book. Saramago always leaves you with the most shocking phrases that really stay with you for a long time. Also, a thing that I love about this author is that his use of language is very accessible to everyone. It is very unusual for me to find something along with the plot that I don't understand. The only thing you might find is some words here and there that you can easily search the meaning for and you even get the advantage of now knowing a new word in Portuguese. As I usually say, if the book doesn't teach you anything is it not that much of a good book. As we can see by the little this book is all about death, and what a great theme for a book. He basically creates death as having a personality and as this real entity. Nevertheless, sometimes José Saramago's books have amazing writing and then the plot never really satisfies me. The only book by him that I enjoyed every single second was "O Homem Duplicado", and this one has reached the same level. One thing that I found interesting is that Saramago's novels not only have already some movies adaptations but there are also some things out there that seem to be so inspired by his stories, but maybe it is just my impression. Overall, an exquisite and captivating read. Great way to start 2022.
