The Algeria of tomorrow is his country, one where colonialism will be nothing but a bad memory, a baleful event in the history of the exploitation of man by man. One where Arabs will no longer be made to grovel before others. A sovereign State, independent from France.

glorious, jarring read. tomorrow they won’t dare to murder us tells the story of pied-noir, fernand iveton, sentenced to death for attempting to bomb an empty factory. the novel pans between the act/the trial, and a passionate romance with his wife, hélène. extreme sacrifice, intense love. revolutionary through and through. 

i hold deep appreciation for andras’ concise, yet incredibly pronounced and moving prose. looking forward to reading his next novel which reimagines bac ho’s time spent in france.

This little book contains multitudes. It’s historical fiction centered on a real life communist who was the only French man tried and murdered by state after planting a bomb that never went off in a factory. The main focus of the novel is the failures of the French and Algerian-French left /liberal movement during the anti colonial struggle in Algeria. The protagonist becomes disillusioned with the communist party that rejects armed struggle as a means to independence, he poignantly asks “

” and joins the Algerian national liberation front(FLN) leading to he’s demise. Although he chose to join armed struggle he was against harming civilians and planted a bomb in a location without people hoping to commit a violent act as a symbol , this however did not save him from the state’s death penalty, in the eyes of the French he was a traitor for choosing the Arabs than he’s own people, the settlers.

Brief, tremendously beautiful story of anticolonial struggle and LOVE (my two favourite topics), based on the life of activist and revolutionary Fernand Iveton. 

The translation is a wonderful read (page 50—‘Paris crumbles under a thick drapery of sky’) and the novel is a very tender portrait of love and solidarity against the backdrop of the Algerian War.
