Investigation of Methods of Supporting Single-thickness Specimens in a Fixture for Determination of Compressive Stress-strain Curves

Aluminum alloy sheet-metal specimens were supported in a fixture by rollers, offset grooved plates, opposite grooved plates. flat brass plates or flat wooden plates. It was found that measured values of compressive yield stress and modulus of elasticity obtained with roller supports were independent of supporting force applied to specimen, provided that sufficient minimum force is used to overcome initial deviations from flatness. Satisfactory stress-strain curves were obtained with all types of support, when supporting force is about 45 lb.
