Making Love with the Land

I didn’t always find it easy to follow Whitehead’s own poetic trail of thoughts but about half way through the book it occurred me that this might be intentional. The deeply personal character of his writing serves two functions, often simultaneously: an invitation to bear witness to the most intimate corners of his life, and a place to shelter behind the walls of personal anecdote. In this way, his stories read as beautiful catharsis. His chapter “Me, the Joshua Tree” resonated so deeply with me that I think it will be a piece of writing I come back to time and time again.
