Die jüdische Familie der kleinen Anna flüchtet kurz vor den Wahlen 1933 aus Berlin und muss neben Schwierigkeiten mit Sprache und Kultur auch damit zurechtkommen, dass der Vater als Journalist plötzlich kein Geld mehr verdienen kann. 

Das hat mir gut gefallen. Auch wenn es an ein jüngeres Publikum gerichtet war als vorher von mir angenommen, ist es doch immer wieder schön, solche Geschichten aus der Kindsperspektive zu erleben. Es ist wenig politisch, sondern beschreibt vor allem familiären Zusammenhalt und die Schwierigkeiten, sich plötzlich in einem Land wiederzufinden, in dem man kein Wort versteht. Gerade diese ersten Momente in den neuen Ländern, die Beschreibungen der ersten Schultage oder die naiv-neugierige Beschreibung der Sitten und Bräuche sind das Herzstück dieser kurzen Lektüre.

Im Nachhinein gefällt mir da auch die kürzlich gesehene Verfilmung noch einmal besser, allein deswegen, weil man sich doch recht nah an die Vorlage hält und die Abweichungen verschmerzbar sind. 

Die zwei Fortsetzungen sind definitiv auch auf meinem Radar.

In some ways I wish I had read this book as a child but, like "I Am David", "The Book Thief" and "Un sac de billes", this is a so-called "children's book" that is worth (re-)reading as an adult. I will be tracking down the other two parts of the trilogy ASAP.

I had to read this book for a school project. It makes it easier to talk about the hard things Anna and her family went through, because we see everything from a kid's point of view. I have also moved in different countries and I have went through the same "going to school when you don't know the language" kind of thing, of course it had been harder for her, because of the financial problems and the fact that you don't have a home to return to. Great book!
