Januar 1933.

"First they came for the Communists, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak out for me."

In some ways I wish I had read this book as a child but, like "I Am David", "The Book Thief" and "Un sac de billes", this is a so-called "children's book" that is worth (re-)reading as an adult. I will be tracking down the other two parts of the trilogy ASAP.

Recounts the adventures of a nine-year-old Jewish girl and her family in the early 1930's as they travel from Germany to England.

So well written, honestly one of my all time favourite books

When Hitler stole pink rabbit - Bombs on Aunt Dainty - A small person far away.

Nine-year-old Anna was too busy with schoolwork and friends in 1933 to take much notice of Adolf Hitler's rise to power in her native Germany. But when her father is suddenly, unaccountably missing, and her family flees Berlin in secrecy, Anna is forced to learn the skills needed to be a refugee and finds she's much more resilient than she thought.192 pp. Copyright © Libri GmbH. Partly autobiographical, these are first and second books in the internationally acclaimed trilogy by Judith Kerr, telling the unforgettable story of a Jewish family fleeing from Germany at the start of the Second World War. Michael Morpurgo called When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit: "The most life-enhancing book you could ever wish to read." This special bind-up, celebrating the fortieth anniversary of When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit ,is based on Judith's own experiences. The last-minute escape, village life in Switzerland, the family's refugee existence in Paris and their final arrival in England were all part of her childhood. Follow the deeply moving yet often humorous story of Anna and her much-loved family through their flight from Nazi Germany to their new life in war-torn London.
