I have been slowly dabbiling in the horror genre, trying to see where my interest falls, and i am now aware that this level of brutality isn't it. This book was foul, i physically gagged at certain parts.

However, that's not to say this book is not well written. The author set out to make this story happen, and it certainly did.

If you are uncomfortable with VIVID descriptions of gore, body horror, torture or sexual violence. This book is not for you.

as far as gore and disgusting behavior so far this takes the cake 🍰. Only the second splatterpunk book I have read and if the goal was to make me want empty my stomach and make me want to shower profusely then hats off to the author. 

Also Mateo you made me feel betrayed at the end. 💔

My book club friends swore that this book is disgusting and vile and I didn’t believe them at first. I read extreme horror from time to time, the last being The Diary of a Rapist, which I skimmed past one chapter and another. That was a good time, sure, but it ultimately got under my skin when things felt like a white man complaining about his “oh woe is me kind of life” and therefore, I didn’t feel like good when I finished it.

Unlike The Diary of a Rapist, No One Rides for Free tells a tale of a family on their journey towards their destination. I believe it was a university where Poppy and Ralph enrolled. While their mother is busy eye-fucking the stranger she just met in the convenience store, a strange man had invaded their territory by inviting himself into their car and placing them on hostage. Now, this book has multiple trigger warnings, one that I took lightly until everything was revealed that yes, indeed, this book deserved a 5 star from me for being compelling, interesting, and gruesome at the same time.

It’s not that I enjoyed what happened to the victims, but the way this book was conveyed and written had me stopping sometimes to gather my brain cells–or, what’s left of it. This book is not for the faint of heart, I’m surprised I didn’t find this gem on my own and instead, learnt from a fellow book reader about this.
