Once again Verne makes use of fainting as a means to gloss over the details of difficult transitions in the action. Oh well, it's still captivating and fun to read.

I decided to pick up Journey to the Centre of the Earth because I thoroughly enjoyed the Hollywood remake. I have been on a bit of a journey myself as I try to read the original works for famous movies that have passed on the screen at my local theatre.

I did not find this book to be the amazing novel everyone has led me to believe, but it was incredibly written. The novel itself was amazing and the wording was fantastic, but I found it to be quite boring action wise. I had high expectations, which probably ruined this book for me.

Overall, the book is truly amazing, but I found it boring and hard to hold onto. A spectacular novel, but not perfect for me. 

I feel that if I would have read this novel in an English class where it was examined rather than a "for fun" read, I would have enjoyed it more and understood it more.

This book made me want to journey to my local active volcano and see if I can get to the centre of the Earth through a network of tunnels, something I am sure would have ended in my demise, and yet, I kind of still want to try. Who knows, maybe there's a secret world under New Zealand full of weird and wild flora and fauna. 

Either way, this book took me on a journey. It was one of amazement and bewilderment, and I enjoyed every line of it.

Proper boring. First 150 pages (out of 220) is a completely uneventful dialogue about an obscure Victorian geological debate. Narrator is kind of charming. Didn't help that we were just waiting for the dinosaurs to appear.

Took a break from Malazan to read this little classic. Totally worth the day spent. Incredible adventure, from the peaks of Iceland to the vast depths below the seas. A really good classic.

This was probably one of the more difficult books i've read, unlike Around the World in Eighty Days this book had way more technical jargon and there's only so many times you want to google all the different types of rocks or animals found in the stone ages, fascinating as it may be. 
Anyways, despite the fact that half of the time i found myself basically clueless in some parts, 

it was an enjoyable read.

The POV character is rather miserable. It works, though.

I haven't had great luck with books written in the 19th century, but this was a pleasant surprise. It was an easy read! I finished it in quick time and the characters of Otto Lindenbrock and his nephew were easy to follow. The description used was incredible and it's amazing how forward thinking Jules Verne was for his time.

After listening to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, I was excited for this book. It fell short for me. It was tedious and boring until mid way through. The rest of the book seemed hurried and then is was done. More writing went into the preparation of the voyage then the actual center of the earth which was a let down. Left so much undone. Was a little annoyed with whiney Axel.

Bon, mon 3è roman de Jules Verne englouti, je peux commencer à en parler sans faire trop d’erreurs j’espère. On reprend la formule du duo ou trio de personnage, donc un homme au service d’un autre (Passepartout dans le Tour du monde en 80 jours, Conseil dans 20,000 lieues sous les mers, Hans dans Voyage au centre de la Terre); on sait comment va se terminer le livre: le retour sain et sauf des personnages, acclamés par un salon de scientifiques, grandis de leurs expériences et aventures; une quête menée par la passion savante, une soif de connaissances et de découvertes ajoutez à cela de nombreuses descriptions, énumérations ichtyologiques, du calcaire comme d’une espère végétale. Ici s’arrête toutes ressemblances. 

Que ce soit sur terre, dans les mers, sous la terre, Jules Verne se permet tout. Il partage ses fantaisies scientifiques, tu veux un reptile de l’époque antédiluvien vivant dans notre bon vieux 19è siècle, tu l’auras.

Et c’est beau de le voir prendre des risques pour nous émerveiller, risquant de nous faire perdre nos accroches avec le livre, jugé fantaisiste, mais le ton reste savant et l’on veut y croire, on ne questionne même pas la présence d’hommes préhistoriques ici ou là. 

Revenons donc au fameux ouvrage, déjà, il est plus court. Je n’ai passé que quelques jours avec lui tandis que quelques semaines m’avaient liées à 20,000 lieues sous les mers. Dommage, mais ça marche. 

Axel, un jeune géologue vit chez son oncle le Professeur Lidenbrock, un irascible savant empreint de passion pour les minéraux. Il découvre un manuscrit du 16è siècle dans lequel un cryptogramme annonce qu’un savant Arne Saknussemm aurait découvert un chemin pour rejoindre le centre de la Terre. Ne remettant rien en questions, Lidenbrock cherche à renouveler l’aventure, emportant son jeune neveu malgré lui. 

A nouveau, les personnages sont pleins d’ambiguité, ne cesse de surprendre au travers des pages, comme le caractère emprein de folie savante qu’est Otto Lidenbrock qui se dédouble entre l’oncle d’Axel et le Professeur. Fascinante personnalité que ce personnage clairement dans son monde, en quête de preuves que la théorie sur le refroidissement du noyau terrestre est bien réelle, repoussant tout obstacle avec une énergie et une détermination digne de respect, souvent inquiétante.

Hans, l’Islandais qui ne prononce qu’une dizaine de mots pendant les 300 pages est silencieux, vous l’aurez compris. Il est vigoureux et va suivre les deux géologues dans leur incroyable odyssée sans jamais poser de questions, sauvant les deux Allemands à maintes reprises, tout en restant taciturne. Les nuances de ce personnage sont nombreuses, il est à la fois prévoyant et plein de ressources, tout en apparaissant quasi-stupide. Les seules interventions de l’homme arrivent quand il demande à être payé pour ses services toutes les semaines, malgré les situations dégradées dans lesquelles les aventuriers se trouvent au moment-même.

Le plus étonnant, et c’est là le génie de l’analyse humaine que conduit Jules Verne, c’est la réaction des deux savants suite à la découverte la plus intéressante du périple: un homme (et sans doute plusieurs autres) vit sous terre. Ils en sont effrayés. Ils ne fuient pas pour autant la présence de monstres marins, de pachydermes d’une autre époque ou de végétations impressionnantes. Ils fuient l’homme.

La cause principale d’inquiétude chez ces deux savants est le renversement du système de la boussole, et non pas la boule d’énergie inqualifiée et inqualifiable qui les attaque, ni l’explication de la survie de l’homme parmi de tels monstres. Etonnant donc. Ce livre mérite quelque chapitres qui iraient plus profondément dans la recherche scientifique, ici aucune preuve n’est rapportée de leurs voyages, on les croit sur parole avec l’appui d’un Islandais incapable de parler allemand, enfin bon. 

Enfin, les deux seules femmes de ce livre sont Graüben, la jeune pupille de Lidenbrocke, aimée et aimant Axel qui se garde bien de faire partie de l’aventure (on ne lui propose évidemment pas de se joindre aux savants, bien qu’elle soit elle-même la plus méticuleuse des géologues); et la bonne Marthe. Bon, c’était une autre époque. 

N’empêche que ce livre est un condensé d’aventures surprenantes, Jules Verne continue d’exercer son pouvoir littéraire sur le lecteur (les chapitres sur la recherche d’eau et ses effets sur les protagonistes rendrait n’importe qui assoiffé - ce qui rappelle le manque d’air dans 20,000 lieues sous les mers, qui m’avaient suffoqué étant pourtant entourée d’oxygène pur). Ce livre raconte une histoire merveilleuse, Jules Verne ne connaît aucune limite et il serait bon de prendre son exemple plus souvent.

A really good story! not at all what I expected, but really good. I am excited to read more novels by Jules Verne.

Now I understand why this is called a classic! It was such an epic adventure full of mystery, danger and heroism. It was also so interesting to learn what people of the 1860s believed in terms of science (such as the earth’s layers, conductivity and evolution).

For anyone who loves science fiction this is a MUST READ

It’s not the greatest I’ve ever read and it’s by no means the worst. So all in all it’s pretty ok. The Journey is the most interesting part of it, the characters are pretty one note but I don’t think that they were supposed to be complex anyway. 

On a side note the movie with Brendan Fraser is actually pretty accurate in terms of events and a professor dragging his nephew with him on an incredible journey.

Este clásico es una de las mejores aventuras que he leído en toda mi vida, emocionante desde el principio aunque el viaje en sí tardó en emprenderse. Me pareció que desde el mismo momento en que se encontró aquel manuscrito, la travesía ya había empezado. Incluso los preliminares se me hicieron tan ligeros y oportunos como un mapa que conduce directamente al tesoro. Cada detalle aportaba lo necesario a la historia para hacerla creíble, interesante y llamativa.
A pesar de que en ocasiones no sucedía nada particularmente movido, jamás perdió la línea estable que avivó mi interés y me condujo por cada página con el ánimo elevado y las ansias de aventura más aceleradas. Nunca decayó el encanto y el ritmo fue adecuado para una narración prolija y minuciosa. Me gustó la primera persona del sobrino del profesor, con las cualidades de cada personaje muy bien marcadas y diferenciadas, y los términos empleados en todo el libro lograron despertar en mí la curiosidad y el hambre de saber más que no me permitieron cerrar el libro hasta llegar al final de la significativa aventura.
Creo que quien abra las páginas de este impresionante relato y ande en la búsqueda de grandes hazañas, sabrá apreciar cada recurso utilizado por el autor que, incluso desde el punto de vista de aquellos que no se inclinan por las ciencias, fueron tan bien empleadas que uno termina adoptándolas como propias y llegando a amarlas incluso. Necesariamente pormenorizada, esta historia me atrapó ni bien surgió el enigma, caído de entre las páginas de aquel precioso manuscrito. Me sentí parte de esa perfecta ventura, como si estuviese destinada a conocer los acontecimientos aquí narrados y maravillarme de esta forma.

La alucinante historia construida por la asombrosa mente de Verne no deja de deslumbrarme.
