Since reading this book, and sitting down with Julia to talk about the experience of becoming an accidental birder, I am obsessed with birds. Following Julia as she falls into her passion for birds, I couldn't help but wonder about the singers in the trees in my back yard. I downloaded an app to recognize birdsongs. If I'm not careful, I will also become an unintentional birder.
But really, you should read this book. It follows Julia as she follows the birds, but it also lets us in on her family's history and imagines her family's migration and her grandmother's life in the way we'd think about birds. Where we belong has not so much to do with where we are, but what we do when we're there and who we're with. There is another whole book sitting inside this one as I imagine the life of her grandmother.
