I didn’t realize how little I knew about Julie Andrews’ life. Hearing about her upbringing and her great fortunes as a young singer and the hardships of her childhood and personal life was truly informative. I loved hearing all her stories about the early days and runs of both ‘My Fair Lady’ and ‘Camelot’ and about all first hand accounts working with Lerner and Loewe, Oscar Hammerstein II and Moss Hart. Simply a delightfully well-written memoir and I can’t wait to read her next one.
I’m not a mega Julie Andrews fan but I do appreciate her and was curious about her memoirs. I’m glad I read this one and look forward to reading the sequel, Home Work. Home chronicles Andrews’ life growing up during the WWII bombings over England, a messy family life, and the events that led her to theater and eventually Hollywood. I especially love her account of Walt Disney and the tour he gave her and her husband at the time through Disneyland. I listened to Home on audiobook and that is the medium I recommend as hearing Julie Andrews herself tell her life story is truly a magical experience. It adds layers of emotion to the narrative that otherwise might not be noted given her personality doesn’t leap off the page as aggressively as Elton John’s does in his own memoir, but I assure you it is there. I’m surprised this doesn’t have a higher rating or amount of reviews on Goodreads as I thoroughly enjoyed this account, but I suppose it’s a relatively older memoir.
