I think I liked this when I read it but I would probably hate it now bc a) the blurb contains the phrase "loony bin" even though it is ostensibly a ~sympathetic~ portrayal of mental illness and b) I just read a blog post by the author that did not endear me to her or her writing style in the least

Super book! It took me a while to finish it, but that's because I own it and I put library books on top of the priority list. For some reason, I'm attracted to books about mental health and mental hospital (dunno what that says about me...) so I really wanted to read this. I always like funny, quirky books like these and I like how Julie Halpern mixes a loony bin with comedy. The result was a heartwarming, endearing novel with endearing characters. Likeable characters!

Honestly it was a super fun and entertaining read, with some deep meaning and messages behind it. I think people should read this because it puts a spin on "loony bins" and mental health and societal expectations of young people today. Great read!

Edit from 2018: this book is way more problematic than I remember it being years ago. So much slut shaming, fat shaming, use of slurs, etc. Really didn’t enjoy it upon a second reading.
